Lake Ihema

Lake Ihema is located in the eastern part of Rwanda, on the border with Tanzania, covering an area of approximately 100 kilometers. Rich in biodiversity, except for fish, it is home to crocodiles and hippopotamuses. It boasts of over 560 bird species, the most remarkable of which is the shoebill. It is situated in the Kayonza district, on the southern part of the Akagera National Park.

Boat cruises

These are conducted, and during this trip, tourists have the opportunity to see hippos, crocodiles, and various birds. Boat trips are conducted between 7:30 am and 9:00 am in the morning and in the afternoon between 3:00 pm and 4:00 pm, hence providing the best opportunities for sunset viewing. This is also one of the best times for taking good photographs.

Bird Watching

The lake boasts over 500 bird species, which include shoebills, malachite kingfishers, papyrus gonoleks, plovers, herons, and sandpipers, among others. Bird lovers should always carry with them binoculars and a good camera so as to enjoy this activity.
