Sempaya Hotsprings

Sempaya Hotsprings; this is located in Semliki National Park with both male and female hot springs. Geographically, hot springs are formed by thermal heat that boils in the earth’s crust. Both the male and female hot springs attract tourists that flock to the Semliki National Park. Semuliki is located in western Uganda, approximately a 5-hour drive from Uganda’s capital, Kampala. The female hot spring locally known as Nyansimbe is believed to be a spot of healing; hence, most women go to this area particularly for healing. The same applies to pregnant women that visit the area to receive blessings for safe delivery.

The male hot spring locally known as Bitete was formed before the female hot spring and is believed to be the husband of Nyansimbe. It is believed that these two were married and disappeared into the forest; hence, a hot spring. Bitete is believed to have disappeared first, later followed by Nyansimbe in search of her husband. Water shoots up and steam vents constantly. You can boil eggs here in 10 minutes.

As of today, many people still perform rituals to appease the spirits and throw coins in the water in a way of doing sacrifices. Locals, tourists, and other animals, especially primates, come to this hot spring for enjoyment.   Tourists visiting the hot spring can combine their trip with a visit to Toro Semliki, chimpanzee tracking in Kibale, and memorable game drives in Uganda’s top tourist destination, Queen Elizabeth National Park.
