Mountain Sabyinyo

Mountain Sabyinyo; Sabyinyo is derived from the Kinyarwanda word “Iryinyo,” meaning “tooth.” Mt. Sabinyo is an extinct volcano and also considered one of the oldest volcanoes in the Virunga Mountains, northeast of Lake Kivu and west of Lake Bunyonyi. The mountain summit at 3,669 meters (12,037 ft) marks the intersection of the Rwanda, Uganda, and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) borders and, hence, holds an important religious significance for local tribes.

Mount Sabinyo is a stratovolcano formed by successive eruptions of lava and ash over millions of years. It is part of the larger Virunga Mountain Range, which includes several other prominent peaks. In comparison with the volcanic mountains in the Virunga region, Sabinyo has recorded no historical eruptions or eruptions in recent years. There have been no recorded historical eruptions. Therefore, it is considered an extinct volcano rather than an active one.

Mountain Sabyinyo lies within the Albertine Rift montane highlands, a known zone of tectonic plate divergence and uplift. Elevation zones support distinct vegetation belts: bamboo up to 3,000 m, montane forest below, and afro-alpine elements above the treeline. Due to steep sides and narrow ridgelines, summit treks require manual climbing sections, including stair-ladder installations on the Ugandan route. The volcano stands at an elevation of approximately 3,645 meters (11,959 feet) and has three distinct peaks. These peaks mark the intersection of the borders of Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The mountain is known for its rugged terrain, steep slopes, and dense vegetation.
