Sipi Falls

Sipi Falls sits on the edge of Mount Elgon in the Kapchorwa District, Eastern Uganda, with stunning views of the Karamoja plains. The term “Sipi” is derived from the local word “Sep,” which denotes an indigenous plant resembling a wild banana, after the Sipi River along the riverbank. The plant is used for treating fever and measles among the local people. It consists of three waterfalls situated to the northeast of the Mbale and Sironko districts. It is also approximately 274 kilometers northeast of Uganda’s capital city and 1.7 kilometers from the Kenyan border. It is believed that tourists flock to the area all year round because of its strategic location and beautiful scenery.

Things to do at Sipi

Hiking

This usually takes approximately 3 hours and lies at an altitude of 1,775 meters. It’s sometimes a bit tricky to hike but worth it as you get to enjoy the stunning views of Sipi Falls. Tourists who visit Sipi are mostly interested in the three falls: Chebokoch Falls at 85 meters, Chepkui Falls at 65 meters, and 100 meters, which is one of the highest.

Coffee Experience

Sipi is known as the main producer of Arabic coffee, and these coffee beans grow at an altitude of between 1,600 and 1,900 meters. The coffee tour is so interesting in a way that tourists start by visiting the farm and are taken through the process of farming and harvesting till the time it is harvested and roasted. At the end of the day you get to taste a cup of coffee.

Community

Get to visit a nearby community as you get to know much about the early history. With the help of an elder from the community, together with a guide, learn about the survival skills the community has used to live in this particular area.

Abseiling

This is a must-do for all tourists traveling to Sipi. Stand at the top of the highest fall with a briefing and later put on abseiling gear and later go for the activity.
