Ajai Wildlife Reserve was declared a game sanctuary by the British government in 1937 on a limited area of 4 square kilometers, and the part that was declared a sanctuary was part of King Ajai’s palace. It was established in 1962 as a white rhino sanctuary. It is located in northern Uganda and is also known for its beautiful scenery, diverse wildlife, and beautiful landscape, west of the bank of the river Nile and 32 kilometers east of Arua. It stands at an altitude of 700-1,000 kilometers.

Bird Watching
This is one of the main activities carried out at Ajai Wildlife Reserve. It boasts over 200 recorded bird species across its diverse savannah and woodlands. Notable bids include grey-crowned cranes, Abyssinian ground hornbills, marabou storks, herons, and helmeted guinea fowls, among others. This is a chance for bird lovers and a reminder to carry binoculars, good cameras, and extra batteries.
Game Drives
Due to the vast savannah grasslands, tourists at Ajai Wildlife Reserve are provided with opportunities of seeing so much wildlife, like hartebeests, bushbucks, warthogs, Uganda kobs, colobus monkeys, and baboons, among others.
Guided nature walks
While at Ajai Wildlife Reserve, clients get a chance to step out of the vehicle and explore the reserve on foot as they get to see some wildlife that they may have missed spotting during the game drive, like butterflies and smaller mammals. As of January 2026, white rhinos have been relocated to Ajai Wildlife; hence, there is a chance for you to spot these rhinos while on a guided nature walk.
