Gishwati Mukura National Park is Rwanda’s fourth and newest national park, which was gazetted in 2015 and later started its operations in September 2020. It covers an area of about 3,558 hectares in the Ngororero and Rutsiro districts in the Western Province. It is also considered one of Africa’s young and newly established national parks.

Birding
With over 230 recorded bird species, Gishwati Mukura National Park offers bird enthusiasts opportunities to spot rare and diverse birds in a unique forest habitat. Albertine endemics, such as the Rwenzori turaco, regal sunbird, strange weaver, and purple-breasted sunbird, attract visitors seeking species found in few other places. Other notable birds include the grey crowned crane, mountain yellow warbler, dusky crimson-winged, and white-headed wood hoopoe. The best time to see these birds is between December and February.
Golden Monkey Trekking
This is one of the most popular activities carried out in this national park. The trek always starts early in the morning with a briefing and later continues to the forest with an experienced and well-experienced guide.
