Shoebill tracking at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary

Shoebill tracking at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary: Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary was established in 2005 with the aim of reintroducing Southern white rhinos into the wild. It is located approximately 165 kilometers from Uganda’s capital city, Kampala. The ranch is not only for rhino tracking but also a bird haven for the notable bird, the shoebill. Tourists interested in birds get the opportunity of trekking the shoebill while at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary. Being the most sought-after bird to be seen in Uganda, the shoebill, with the assistance of the game rangers, tourists will be able to locate this bird.

It derives its name from the structure of its bill that resembles a shoe. It can be seen with the use of a dugout canoe in Lugogo swamp. During shoebill tracking at Ziwa, other birds can be spotted, for example, the pied kingfisher, African grey hornbill, African jacana, African pygmy kingfisher, marabou stork, African marsh harrier, giant kingfisher, Goliath heron, malachite kingfisher, Egyptian goose, and grey crowned crane, among others. Bird lovers are therefore advised to carry with them good binoculars, extra batteries, and cameras for capturing these long-lasting memories. The dugout canoes are provided by the local community at a fee, thus enhancing partnership and collaboration.
