Mountain Rwenzori National Park, also known as the Mountains of the Moon, are located in the western part of Uganda along the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). It is considered Africa’s third highest mountain peak with many lakes, glaciers, and waterfalls. It covers an area of approximately 996 square kilometers and is managed by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA). Rwenzori Mountains National Park was established in 1991 and designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994 due to its natural and outstanding beauty.

Things to do in Mountain Rwenzori National Park

Mountaineering

This is one of the most carried out activities in Rwenzori, and this is made possible with the help of a reliable tour operator. To access the mountain, Rwenzori has two routes; that is, tourists can access the mountain either through the Kilembe or Nyakalengijo route. Mountaineering is such a thrilling adventure and is recommended for tourists that are physically fit. Most peaks to explore include Mt. Stanley, Mt. Speke, Mt. Baker, and Margherita Peak. It is such a thrilling, unforgettable experience climbing up to the top. Mountaineering services are conducted mostly by Rwenzori Mountaineering Services (RMS), Rwenzori Trekking Services (RTS), and Mountains of the Moon guides.

Nature Walks

These walks usually start from the Nyakalengijo gate to Nyabitaba and Mahoma Falls, led by a ranger guide from the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA). During this walk, clients get the opportunity to explore beyond by identifying different animals and plant species. This also provides opportunities for taking good and clear photographs.

Bird Watching

Rwenzori Mountains National Park boasts of over 217 bird species, hence giving bird lovers a great opportunity to explore the park beyond. Notable birds include the Rwenzori turaco, regal sunbird, golden-winged sunbird, Archer’s robin-chat, blue-headed sunbird, dusky crimson wing, and dwarf honeyguide, among others.

Cultural Encounter

A visit to the surrounding community helps the tourist understand and dig deeper into the early days and life of these locals by getting to listen to earlier childhood stories from the community elders and also getting to understand how they have survived throughout the years as well as carried out their day-to-day activities.

When to Visit Mountain Rwenzori National Park

The park can be visited throughout the year; however, the most recommendable months for mountain climbing are during dry months, that is, between December and February and May and September.
