Mount Elgon National Park is located in the northeastern part of Uganda and is shared by both Uganda and Kenya. It covers an area of 1,110 square kilometers on the Uganda side and 169 square kilometers on the Kenya part. The Ugandan part was gazetted in 1992, while the Kenyan part of Mount Elgon was gazetted in 1968. The park gets its name from an extinct shield volcano on the border of Uganda and Kenya.

Things to do in Mount Elgon National Park

Cultural Encounter

A visit to the local community as tourists engage with the Sabiny and Bagisu, visiting homesteads and participating in their day-to-day activities like farming. It’s another interesting activity tourists should not miss while on a safari to Mount Elgon.

Hiking

Tourists can take the Sasa Trail, which is considered the shortest, and explore around the community and gardens. It is also the most challenging trail, but most tourists end up conquering it.

Biking

This was majorly opened up by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), and clients on this adventure get to explore the surrounding areas, including the plantations, Soroti plains, and farmlands.

Bird Watching

The park boasts of over 275 bird species, hence a chance for most bird lovers to spot so many birds like Sharpe’s starling, willow warbler, moustached tinkerbird, African green pigeon, lemon dove, and white-starred robin, among others.
