Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is located in the southwestern part of Uganda and encompasses three active volcanoes: Mount Gahinga, Mount Muhavura, and Mount Sabyinyo. It covers an area of 33.7 square kilometers, and its altitude ranges from 2,227 to 4,127 meters. It was established in 1991 and is managed by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA).

Gorilla Trekking

Most tourists to the Pearl of Africa always consider this gorilla trekking activity on their bucket list, and this is known as one of the most thrilling, adventurous, and unforgettable experiences one should never miss on their visit to Uganda. All tourists participating in this particular activity are always advised to follow the rules and regulations regarding trekking. It should be noted that this park has only one gorilla family, and it is open to tourists all year round.

Bird Watching

The park boasts of over 120 bird species, and this is a great opportunity for most tourists interested in doing this particular activity. Notable birds to see include the African olive pigeon, regal sunbird, scarlet-tufted sunbird, strange weaver, blue-headed sunbird, blue-headed coucal, and dusky crimson wing, among others. Tourists, most especially bird lovers, are encouraged to carry with them binoculars and good cameras for good photographs.

Guided nature walks

With the help of an experienced ranger from the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), tourists get to explore the forest as they get to see other animals and other wildlife species.

Community Visit

Visit the Batwa community near the park, get to know the different activities taking place in their community, for example basket weaving, participate in these activities, and listen to their early childhood stories from the elders.

Golden Monkey Trekking

This is another activity carried out in Mgahinga National Park, and its permit is always booked in advance with the help of a reliable and licensed tour operator from the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA).

Hiking

This activity is recommended for tourists that are physically fit and can lead you to the summit for stunning views, and this can take you between 2 and 6 hours.

When to Visit Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

The park can be visited at any time of the year, but the best preferred months are during the dry season for easy gorilla trekking, which is between December and February and May and September.
